What to think about before getting a Dog!

Car Safety KitIf you are thinking of adding a new, furry family member to your home, it’s important to think of the additional costs.  Food and visits to the veterinarian are common costs but did you know that your new pooch could increase your homeowners/renters insurance premium?

The Insurance Information Institute reported that nearly $489 billion was paid out in dog bite claims in 2012.  Additionally, they reported that one-third of homeowners’ claims were submitted due to dog bites, each payout averaging $30,000.

So what does this mean for you, your insurance premium and your canine friend? Some insurance carriers charge a higher premium for certain breeds of dog. Additionally, some companies exclude coverage for certain breeds that they deem as “dangerous.”

Here are eleven (11) breeds of dog that are typically considered risky by most insurance carriers:

Akita, Alaskan Malamute, Chow Chow, Doberman Pinscher, German Shepard, Pit Bull, Presa Canario, Rottweiler, Siberian Husky, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, and any Wolf Hybrid.

If you are unsure if your pup may cause an issue with your insurance, please contact your insurance agent with any questions or concerns.
